Adopt an Orangutan

Adopt an Orangutan: Adopt an orangutan with this WWF Adopt an Orangutan gift and find out how to adopt an orangutan through orangutan conservation projects. The WWF Adopt an Orangutan is a great cause.

Adopt an Orangutan

The Orangutan is in grave danger of extinction because their natural habitations are being converted for human use and conservationists are worried that the world's largest population of wild orangutan in Borneo in south-east Asia will die out within three years. It is now estimated that there are less than 20,000 orangutan left in Borneo, down by a third in just a few years. Orangutan are the world's largest mammal that live in trees, meaning they are arboreal. The animals spend about 99 percent of their time in trees sleeping and eating fruits, leaves, seeds, bark and insects.

When trees disappear, the orangutan have nowhere to go and nothing to eat. It is more than possible that these wonderful animals may be totally extinct within our lifetime. You can make a difference with our adopt an orangutan gift pack. Your sponsorship money will go towards helping WWF to safeguard the future of wild orangutan, and tackle some of the biggest conservation challenges that we face today.

One of the reasons its so important to adopt an orangutan is that if they cannot be preserved in their natural habitat, they will end up in zoos. Consider the recent case of Leila the orangutan who drowned in a German zoo after a visitor threw a bread roll into the enclosure and Leila dived into the water barrier to retrieve it, only to drown. Leila, who was just 10 years old, had lived in the Hamburg zoo since birth. Adopt an orangutan and make a difference.
